On 5 December 2019, we were called by Dr. Puah to gather for Social Engagement meeting. I was not-so excited as I heard from my senior that this programme was so difficult. However, as Dr. Puah explained, I really looking forward to this program. We further divided into three group and happen to be I was in Year1 Group 1. I was quite impressed with Dr. Puah because she keep in touch with her students even it was semester break and during that time, my team struggling to prepare the Module 1 ( Microbes and Hygiene) ,quizzes and survey question. To be honest, I quite confused on task distribution at first but as Dr. Puah keep in touch with her students through email plus the internal workshop , I finally understand that what we are going to do.
On 6 and 13 March 2020, we finally going to SMK Lembah Subang to share the knowledge we gain from Module 3 (Secret Of Life: DNA) and Module 4 (DNA Fingerprinting). I voluntarily to write blog about what happen on that day even though I have never written a blog. I take that as a challenge and new experience. Before we proceed with the presentation, Dr. Puah had reminded us that their learning classes is conducted in Bahasa Malaysia. We felt anxious at first as our slides are in English. However, the presenter is good enough to translate and convey the message in Bahasa Malaysia. The students impressed me because even though they are not science-streamed class, they struggle to understand the content by asking questions to me and other facilitators. They also jotted some important notes to prepare for quiz session. As on hands on session, all students and facilitators burst with excitement. The students really good in following the instruction given. It makes me feel ease. I sometimes ask them what is the purpose of some steps in the experiment like salt, alcohol and cutting DNA strand, and I really satisfied with their answer indicating that they really understand what are they doing.
As this programme ended, I have a mixed feelings either happy or sad. My heart sank when I read one of the students survey state that ‘please come to this school every day.’ I also full of the joys of spring because I have completed this programme. Thanks to the Social Engagement course, I have learnt better communication skill in conveying my ideas and knowledge to the my groupmates and also to the students. This programme also give new experience for being a facilitator. As human beings, I learn most of the things that we know are from experience. New experience give me new knowledge that enable me to correct my mistakes in the past.
