At the end of semester one, on 5 December 2019 we were called by Dr. Puah for a briefing about Social Engagement course. Since I have been looking forward to join volunteering activities, I really excited when Dr Puah introduced this program to us. At first, I was quite confused and did not really understand what we actually need to do but things got clearer as Dr. Puah kept explaining and updating us about the program through email and our group leader. We were divided into 3 groups, and I was in Year 1 Group 1. During the semester break, each group started to prepare the module slides, quizzes, and feedback survey. Our group were working on Module 1 which is Microbes and Hygiene. We decided to distribute the tasks to make it more organized and to ensure involvement of all members since it was a group work. I volunteered myself to prepare the feedback survey with other three members. After the internal workshop was done on 29 February 2020, I finally got a clear image of how the program will be held in the school.
6 March 2020 and 13 March 2020 were the days I have been waiting for. We went to SMK Lembah Subang for our field works by GrabCar service. As we arrived, all of us gathered at the school canteen before the workshop started. On our first day, we conducted a workshop about “The Secret Of Life: DNA” and the second day was about “DNA Fingerprinting”. We started with introducing ourselves to the Form 4 students and proceed with presentation. In the beginning I was a bit worried if I’m not able to explain properly since they are not science stream students and their exposure to the topic was not too much. But I was really amazed with their seriousness and struggles to understand the topic during presentation. I was very happy when they asked questions and jotted some notes showing that they have interest to learn. Next was the most exciting part which is hands on session and seems like all students and facilitators really enjoyed this session. The students did the experiments on their own by following the instructions and demonstration from the facilitators. While they were doing the experiment, I asked them some questions regarding the purpose of doing any steps and explained it to them. After the hands on session was done, we proceed to the quizzes session. Honestly, I was shocked and satisfied at the same time to see the excitement of the students to answer the quizzes. I did not expect them to be that excited. At the end of the program, they were asked to fill the feedback survey form. After collecting the form, I read one of the comment which said “very happy. I love it” and I felt really touched even with the simplest words. Both of field works were ended with photo session.
I am really grateful and thankful that I was given the chance to involve myself in this activity. Social Engagement course indirectly improve my communication skills and I can learn how to explain and convey information effectively. It was an unforgettable experience and I will definitely miss it.
