A VISIT TO SMK LEMBAH SUBANG

KOH XUYING (MIC190015)                                                   DATE: 13 MARCH 2020

Memories in secondary school is one of my precious treasures till now. The environment and friendships are unique and can’t be found anymore. And when our advisor Dr Puah informed us about this project, I was thrilled and excited at the moment. It’s old school days! We were then divided into two different groups among the batchmates to carry out different projects, and for me? I volunteered to join into a group which carried out DNA extraction lately.

On 6 March 2020 and 13 March 2020, we headed to SMK Lembah Subang to carry out the two experiments. It was a torment for me myself to wake up at 7 in the morning, but I did managed to do that. I was excited! Then after a 30 minutes ride, we had reached to the school and were welcomed by the teacher in charge. At 8 o’clock, after a short briefing for approximately 10 minutes, we started with the presentation to the class of two. At first, the students seemed to be confused because the topic is too deep for them. In fact, we all learned those knowledge when we were in foundation. However, they were involving themselves when it comes to hands on experiment. Of course, who prefer studying compared to activity? During the experiment, we did provide our guidance on handling the chemicals and the precautions when carrying out the experiment. Well, I had tried my best not to get involved as much as possible since our intention is to allow our juniors to access these new knowledges on their own.

On the second day of our visit to SMK Lembah Subang which is on 13 March 2020, we had our seminar about “DNA Fingerprinting Lab” and our hands-on activity which is to find out which DNA matches to the crime scene DNA who steal the cheese by doing gel electrophoresis. However, different from the past visit, I was handling the quiz instead of providing guidance. It was a whole new experience being a host for the quiz. Everyone was burning with anger, even my batch mates too. “Who hates prizes?” I would say. To wrap up, we then had photo sessions with the students and the teachers in charge. Not to forget too we had prepared some souvenirs for the school too as an evidence of presenting.

Although our activity had ended for many days, the memories I had with the students is still kept down deep in my heart. I am glad and I appreciates there is such activity held. It reminds me of the memories I had when I was young. The innocent, childish kid, yet who always had his smile on his face. In my  opinion, the greatest benefits of this project for me other than lending a helping hand to the community, is finding my own intention in my life. Thank you SMK Lembah Subang, thank you Dr. Puah, and thank you my batch mates.
