GIG1005 SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT 

REFLECTIVE ESSAY ACTIVITY WITH STUDENTS FROM SMK SRI AMAN

Social Engagement course is a compulsory course for student to at least contributes something to the society. Me as a person who really enjoyed doing interactions activity really looking forward on this course. Why? Because it teaches us a lot of things such as how to be grateful on what our life gives us, it gives you exposure to the outside world and teaches us good value in life. Back in school days, I was always enjoyed every moment whenever university students or any organization organized an event in my school and I never thought that one day I will be the organizer. So when we were introduced with this course by Dr. Puah, I really hope my team could do our best and all the students will enjoy the activities.

We had our first meeting to discuss on the activity and we came out with DNA extraction and DNA finger printing. Then we have been divided into 2 groups lead by Anisah and Amir Hamzah. Each group will carry one activity in which my team will do the DNA finger printing while the other group will do the DNA extraction. On 26th February, our first internal workshops took place where we discussed on the activities, how to deliver our knowledge to the students and many more. In went really smooth although everyone seems so tired due to our fully packed classes. This activity will be led by Amir Hamzah and his team while my group will help them with minor task such as become the photographer, help gather the students and so on. We went to SMK Sri Aman and had our first session with the students. Everything went so well, the students are laughing, the teachers are smiling and I can proudly say that we have our job so well. But nothing is perfect in this world, there are still a few mistakes that I am sure we will be much careful next time. Besides the good thing with the day, there is a thing that really turned me off. My group assigned me into a task without my consent on it. I am really sure that every group work need to be discussed and nothing should be done without others consent. Although I am not happy with it, I still manage to overcome my feelings and done the job.

In the next morning, we had our second internal workshop on DNA finger printing. This time both group switched task in which my group will conduct the activities later on while the other group will help us with minor tasks. Just like the first workshop, in went really well, all discussions and practices are done and we are ready for our next session with Sri Aman’s students. But unfortunately, we are unable to proceed with our next session due to the spreading Covid-19 virus. I am a bit disappointed with it but nothing is more valuable compared to our life so I accepted the decision with an open heart.

So we proceed with our own task divided earlier in which some of us need to create a video representing our activities, create a blog, make a report and so on. I am not happy and pissed with my group because some of them did not even wrote their names in the list distributed earlier. As for my task, me together with my other two group members need to prepare a video of the activities on the workshops days and the session with the students. And I thought it was unfair for us because some of my groupmates does nothing for the course. I am really pissed when I stated and mentioned the problem in group and no one really reply to it. So I decided to do the video alone and left the group unread for a few days. I started to create the video and managed to make a short unfinished video for about one and a half minutes. The next few days, someone from the group sent a fully finished video and I am really shocked because I did not know someone is already preparing the video. Maybe there is a misunderstanding here but I think next time we need to communicate better if we ever be in a group again.

Overall, I think this course is a success and I hope that I am able to join this kind of interactions with people especially with homeless people or maybe orang asli. This course really helps people to communicate with other and improve their communication skills. As for the problems happened during our time, I hope next batch will manage to overcome the problems and will able to organize a much better activities compared to us.
