We do realize that we are not the only living creatures on Earth. There are in fact other tiny organisms that are invisible to the naked eyes called microorganism. We often look down upon these microorganisms thinking that they might not give harm to us. However, we are thankful with the creation of microscope, now people can dig deeper and study further about this unique and ubiquitous creatures. Microbes - some of them are pathogenic, some are not. The normal flora act as a life-saver meanwhile pathogens can be the causative agents to certain diseases. This explains why it is so important for us to know about microbes ever since we are little. Hygiene is another thing that we should keep in mind.
Basically it is hard for us to understand microbes as they are very tiny to be observed alongside with the limited equipments that we have. Besides, all of those scientific terms can be hard to digest to certain people. During the internal workshop which have been conducted on 13 March 2020 for our preparation before the real event at SMK Sri Pantai, I have learned the easiest ways to understand microbes better using only tools and equipments which are readily available at home. As it is my first time learning Microbiology, I am excited to share this knowledge with others too. I like the demonstration of sneezing and hand washing the most from Module 1 because it is truly an eye-opening and even makes me understand better the relations between our actions and the consequences. Definitely can be applied to our daily lives. Besides, I was totally mesmerized by the foldscope for Module 2 which needs to be built on our own and it works wonder like the microscope in laboratory. We could still see the specimens clearly. Even I am excited to handle all of these experiments, and I bet if we conduct this workshop at the school, students will be more delighted than us.
Apparently due to the Covid-19 outbreak, Restricted Movement Order has been enforced for more than 4 weeks starting on 18 March 2020, therefore we did not have the chance to conduct this workshop at school. Instead it has been changed to another alternative methods. I do feel a bit sad, disappointed as well as slightly jealous because when I looked at other groups’ workshops, they were having so much fun with the students. I actually like these kind of activities involving schools and I thought that it is going to be my first activity off campus, apparently it did not happen. But I am accepting it with an open heart. Since we were given another task, my groups has divided all the new task into several smaller groups in order to complete the video, poster and questionnaires as to make things easier. I chose to do poster about Coronavirus because this is a hot topic nowadays. Moreover, my curiousity makes me wants to look up for more information about this virus. I gained a lot of knowledges from the CDC websites, KKM websites, UM Library and others because I want to make sure that I am sharing the right and trusted informations.
From the hand washing video and poster, coronavirus poster alongside with the questionnaires that we are going to post in biomedscse2020 blogs, I truly believed that this is the best way to raise awareness not only to Biomedical Science students, but also to all human beings about the importance of personal hygiene. This is because digital method is the best platform to be used right now to reach out other people in order to raise awareness as we are being adviced to stay at home and practice social distancing. The questionnaires that have been distributed also helps us to know whether everyone is aware of the correct hand washing. Therefore, I truly hope that the video we have prepared can help others to practice the correct ways of hand washing as well as the uses of hand sanitisers. This is because it can prevent us from getting ill and also from contracting infections from bacteria and viruses. Hence, by doing a simple actions like this can save thousand of lives and lessen the burdens carried by our frontliners. At a critical time like this, it is also important for us to get precise informations on coronavirus so that people can take quick actions before spreading it to other people and making it worse.
