GIG 1005 SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT
REFLECTIVE ESSAY
ONG WEN XUEN MIC180039 DATE: 20 APRIL 2020

Science is a subject that can explore many mystery in the world. This is my favourite subject since primary school. When I knew our Social Engagement course activity was giving the knowledge of DNA to the secondary school student, I was very excited because our coordinator Dr. Puah told us that we were going to do small experiment in the DNA extraction. I hadn’t done this kind of experiment before so I was very glad.

Before the semester 1 of year 2 end, the course coordinator, Dr. Puah gave us the introduction of this course and roughly told us her planning to run this activity. She told us that we were going to conduct a small workshop to secondary school student on DNA extraction and DNA finger printing. We were divided into 2 groups. Group 1 conducted the DNA finger printing while group 2 which was the group I in conducted DNA extraction. We had informed that we will complete this course together with our first year juniors.

After we all knew what we have to do, we started to prepare for this activity earlier which was during the semester break. Every group had to prepare presentation slides with their topics given and questionnaires for the secondary school students about their opinions towards our activity with them. Our presentation slides on DNA printing include some basic knowledge and also some quizzes. We also prepared gifts for the students.

When we go back to the university after our semester break, we had an internal workshop on the small experiment on DNA extraction which was conducted by Dr. Puah and a few postgraduates. Our group members had to clearly knew the every steps of the experiment. We had a chance to do the hands-on activities with the guidance of a postgraduate. They explained step by step when we try the hands-on activity. After that, we had a short meeting among our group members to talk about the flow of the activity and the jobs. I was one of the facilitators for the day.

On 28th of February 2020, after we had our lunch, we departed to Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (Perempuan) Sri Aman by grab car. At about 12.45 noon, we reached the school. At 1 pm, the students came inside the hall. Once all students arrived, the emcees started by introducing Biomedical Science. At this time, some of my group members and I went to the science lab of the school to prepare the material needed for the practical session in the afternoon. After prepared well, we went back to the hall to join the photography session. After that, all of us moved to the science lab to start the practical session. My partner Zhi Win and I went to our respectively group. The students were excited to do the experiment. They had chance to extract DNA from their cheek cells and fruits. They goggled to extract the DNA from their cheek cells. They were shocked and excited when they saw their own DNA. When doing the experiments, they were curious about some questions and we tried our best to give the explanations. Then, they continued to extract the DNA from banana. At this time we had some free time to chitchat with them. Some of them were so cute and some of them were very studious. They asked us some questions about DNA. I felt very glad chatting with them.

After cleaning up, the quiz session started. They were so excited to answer the questions, each of them gave their full commitment in this session. Those who answered correctly were rewarded with the gifts we prepared. Seeing them were so active, I was influenced by this warm atmosphere. Before the whole session ended, we gave them feedback forms to filled in. Then, we took a photo before we went back. This photo recorded our best memory in this activity. We went back by grab car. From this meaningful programme, I had learnt the importance of cooperation and communication between groups. I was grateful that I could share the knowledges to the secondary school students. I hope that this activity will stimulate the interest of students on science. At last, I would like to thank Dr.Puah, our Social Engagement course coordinator for helping us to conduct this meaningful activity. (730 words)
