Life is too important to be taken seriously – Oscar Wilde. That is the exact opposite of my life in university. All I think is how I can get through the end of the day without making a mistake. I do agree that I forgot how to enjoy life. My only conversation is with my best friend. I rarely communicate with others in class and we are not in the same college, making it rather difficult to start a conversation unless it was for the sake of assignment. However, through this school visit, it dawned on me that life is nothing without friendship and talking to people like how it should be. And what make this school visit so special to me is I am not only get to mingle around with my coursemates, but also educate high school students on what we are majoring at. Besides, we educate them in an interesting and interactive way which they can also try it themselves at home.
My experiences at the school visit to SMK (P) Sri Aman is priceless. We did an experiment to show how DNA extraction can be done at home. About 40 high school students join this program. Majority of the students only have basic knowledge of the topic, so we prepare a quick presentation to let them familiarize and better understand the experiment. At first, they were quite hesitate to communicate and engage with the discussion and experiment but after a while, they begin to participate more in the experiment. They are very excited and amazed upon seeing the result. We also discuss a lot about the topic. Two of the students in my group even mention their interest in biology and wish to pursue in medicine.
At the end of the program, we did a quick quiz to test their understanding. I feel pleased when the students enjoyed the session and seemed happy upon receiving the gift. My heart flutter when a student from my group says that she had a lot of fun and asked whether we would come back to the school for another session. However, it is unfortunate that our second school visit was cancelled due to Covid-19.
This school visit has been an eye opener for me to improve my social skill and reminisce my school days. When I look at them, I realized how great life can be and living as if you were young. I had to admit that I was not in the mood before the school visit. We need to rush to the school, and I feel so nervous as if I do not prepare much. But thankfully,
everything went well and our sacrifice and hard work does not goes in vain. Furthermore, majority of the students speak in English. Although English is not my first language, I try my best to communicate with them and help them embrace the topic better. I also gain more confidence to talk in front of a lot people. Besides, being a facilitator of this school visit made me realized that I able to play a part as the member of the society to educate and share my knowledge to these students. I hope that they will cherish the memories as I did. Although I only met them for less than a day, I feel somehow connected to them and I am truly blessed with how friendly and welcomed they are to us. I hope these kinds of activities will continue in the future.
